About Us

Hi, we're Jon & Ash - partners in life, love, and a whole lot of travel chaos.

We're the creators of Big Gay World Travel - a space where we can share honest, joyful, and sometimes ridiculous stories from our adventures as a gay couple navigating the globe. Whether it's sipping gluten-free beer in Belgium, hiking Welsh hills in sideways rain, or getting totally lost in Thailand (and loving it), we believe travel is about curiosity, connection, and showing up authentically wherever you are in the world.

Our travel journey didn't begin with a backpack and a one-way ticket. It started, like all good stories do, with a 9 to 5 job and a spreadsheet. Planning our first trip together - a whirlwind multi-stop tour of Slovenia that included wild car-hire, rouge hotels, and too many Aperol Spritz - we realised something: the world isn't always built with queer travellers in mind. But that doesn't mean we shouldn't see it all. From that moment on, we made a pact to explore as much of the world as we could - either together or solo (work allowing) - and to bring other LGBTQ+ travellers along for the ride.

 

Big Gay World Travel was born from a mix of wanderlust, frustration, and love of travel. We wanted to share our real life experiences, not just the postcard moments, highlight destinations that are safe, welcoming and worth your time, even off the beaten track, offer fun and honest tips, and celebrate the joy and messiness of queer travel with heart, high-quality content, and authenticity.

 

So what will you find on our blog?

• City Guides: showcasing some of our favourite cities with friendly cafes and cultural must sees.

• Detailed Itineraries: how to stitch together the perfect multi-stopper to make the most of your travel.

• Travel Stories: Longer reads that dive into the culture, history, and characters we encounter on our journeys.

• Tips and Resources: Safe travel advice, packing guides, gluten-fee finds and more.

• Photography Lead Galleries: We're both behind the camera - and sometimes in front of it too - capturing each destination through a creative and curious lens.

And what have we learned along the way? We've said 'yes' to more adventures leading to better stories; almost everywhere has a welcoming queer community if you look hard enough; and travel won't fix everything but it will expand your world - and that is a magical, life-affirming thing.

Furthermore, we're creating this blog with LGBTQ+ readers and allies in mind, not every travel story or city guide will have an overtly queer angle, but we know what it's like to Google 'Is it safe to be gay in...' before you book a trip and so wherever possible we'll give you the lowdown about our real experiences. We know what it's like to be the only queer couple in a village square, and have made friends in unexpected places, so we're here to help you travel smarter and feel empowered to find joy in every corner of the map.

Lastly, we're not here to tell you how to travel. We're here to show you how we do it - and invite you along for the ride. If you love a good story, a good photo, and a good recommendation - you're in the right place.
